Protecting Your Mining Rewards: Wallet Security Basics
Simple habits that protect your coins from theft, phishing, and human error.
Your keys, your coins
Whoever controls the private key or seed phrase controls the funds. There is no help desk that can reverse a mistaken or stolen transaction, so prevention matters.
Hot wallets vs. cold wallets
A hot wallet is connected to the internet and is convenient for small, frequent use. A cold wallet, such as a hardware wallet, keeps keys offline and is better suited to larger amounts you do not need to move often.
Core habits
- Back up your seed phrase offline. Write it down and store copies in separate secure places. Never photograph it or store it in cloud notes.
- Never share it. No legitimate support team, pool, or exchange will ask for your seed phrase.
- Use a payout address you control. Point your pool payouts to your own wallet instead of leaving rewards on a platform.
- Verify addresses. Check the first and last characters before sending, and send a small test transaction first.
- Protect your accounts. Use unique passwords and an authenticator app or hardware security key, not SMS codes.
- Watch for phishing. Type addresses yourself, bookmark real sites, and be suspicious of urgent messages.
Plan for the unexpected
Decide in advance who could access your funds if something happened to you, and keep clear records of your wallets and transactions for tax purposes.
